Proxy Server and Anonymous Surfing - Why Do You Need Them?

So what exactly is proxy server? It's a server that is positioned between client application and the real "working" server. The main purpose of such servers is to improve application performance and to filter and block incoming and outcoming requests.

In many cases company restrict internet access for their employees and limit it to the certain number of websites that are allowed to bypass company's firewall. This is done to eliminate (or reduce) internet abuse, to decrease bandwidth usage, and to avoid legal liabilities that can occur when employees visit inappropriate websites.

But proxy servers can also be used to mask your ip while you're surfing. And there are many reasons why you might want to have this feature. First, if you surf anonymously, it's much more secure than if you surf directly your ISP (internet service provider).

For one thing, if you're surfing directly, you're showing your ip address, your browser configuration and other crucial details to anybody who's curious enough to know them. It's not difficult to any programmer to write a few lines of code and request all those details from your computer when you land on his website. What is worse, the same data can be gathered by a hacker and used to launch attack on your computer.

When you use proxy services, your ip is masked, and it looks like the request is sent from completely different place.

There are a few proxy services that can help you to maintain your privacy while surfing the web, some of them require you to install sophisticated software applications on your computer, others want you to follow instructions that might appear as a little complicated ones for average internet user.

So I was happy to find one proxy service that allows you to preserve your privacy by simply entering url in the form they provide.
Proxy Service Protects Your Privacy

So you can visit websites, but they can't uniquely identify or track you. And your ip won't be revealed to potential hackers, the task of monitoring your network traffic becomes much more difficult because they use encrypted connection.

Wordpress Internet Security Issue: Your Immediate Attention is Required

Here is a crucial internet security update, 2 gifts and important announcement.

First, the security update. If you're using Wordpess for your blogs, you probably remember that major security hole that was found in Wordpress in the middle of April. In fact, it was so serious that Wordpress urgently released new version to cover this hole.

It leaves directories on your site with a 777 access level. The problem is this directory (for WP, "wp-config") has the access info to your database.

If you haven't heard about this yet and you're using older versions of Worpress, make it your priority to upgrade as soon as possible or at least get the appropriate patches.

The same exploit was used to hack into following programs:

1. RSS to Blog
2. Link Management Assistent (LMA)
3. WordPress.
4. Article Dashboard and Article Directory

The hacker targeted files with permissions set to 777 and 666 and unfortunately a lot of programs (like RSS to Blog) won't run unless these permissions are set to these numbers.

This dangerous security hole allows a hacker to penetrate accounts security and install various hacks (malicious pieces of code used for hackers' advantage). One of them changes the code in php scripts and pages by adding an Iframe redirect and sending visitors to a site in Russia. Immediately after this happens, the process starts on that site that initializes viruses downloads to your computer.

For security purposes it's better NOT to chmod ANYTHING lower than 755, otherwise you leave the doors for hackers wide open...

Bottom line: if during program installation you see instructions to chmod the directory to 777, try to use permission 711 (or 755) instead, this should give enough access for program to work properly.

And while we're are on a topic of computer viruses, do you know the difference between viruses and hoaxes? Earlier I explained how to recognize the latest hoax, and how to avoid it (look for my previous blog post).

Ok, now that this is addressed, let's give you some gifts, shall we?

Right click on the urls below, use save as - and you will have 2 reports on Self-Hypnosis and Feng-Shui:

P.S. I think I give you one more gift today - just a reward for reading this long post.

One way to keep your computer save from easy hacker intrusions is to use password-protected files with strong passwords.

FileShield will let you easily encrypt and decrypt specified files and
folders using just one password. Once locked, these files and folders cannot be deleted or moved.
FileShield is a fr-e.e tool that will make this task a breathe for you.

FileShield - Protect Your Computer with Password-protected files

It stores files and folders locally on your computer in its own FileShield folder. Although this FileShield folder can be seen through Windows Explorer, its contents can’t be viewed unless unlocked with your unique password. When using your computer, you can lock or unlock the FileShield folder as needed.

As an additional measure of security, the folder can be automatically locked after a period of time that you specify, or whenever you shut down your PC.

Serious Computer Virus or Just a Hoax?

I received email yesterday warning me about serious virus that can completely wipe out my C
drive. It sounds very serious but before you hurry up and share the news about this
dangerous virus with your friends and subscribers, it doesn't hurt to check whether this
virus really exists or this is simply a hoax.

Hoax is a false notification about pseudo-virus that doesn't exist in reality. It's still a
mystery to me why people create hoaxes. I don't see any logical explanation for this. When
people create viruses, it's morally wrong, but at least motive is clear - either financial
gain or a challenge to create a hack to break into super-secure system and prove your
superior technical knowledge.

But with hoaxes, there seams to be no reason to create them. Nevertheless there are hundreds
if not thousands of hoaxes around. Here is the example of the latest hoax I mentioned in the beginning of this post:

"Bad virus.... READ
READ AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
Get this sent around to your contacts ASAP...we don't need this spreadingaround.....
PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS:
You should be alert during the next days:
Do not open any message with an attached filed called
"Invitation"
regardless of who sent it .

It is a virus that opens an Olympic Torch which "burns" the whole hard discC of your computer. This virus will be received from someone who has youre-mail address in his/her contact list, that is why you should send thise-mail to all your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 timesthan to receive the virus and open it.
If you receive a mail called "invitation", though sent by a friend,do notopen it and shut down your computer immediately.

This is the worst virus announced by CNN, it has been classified byMicrosoft as the most destructive virus ever.
This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yetfor this kind of virus.
This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vitalinformation is kept.
SEND THIS E-MAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW, COPY THIS E-MAIL AND SEND IT TO
YOUR FRIENDS AND REMEMBER: IF YOU SEND IT TO THEM, YOU WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US"

So hoaxes are notifications about "viruses" that never existed. It doesn't mean that hoaxes
are harmless though. They can easily damage your reputation if you will forward such email to your friends or clients/customers without first verifying that this virus actually exists.

If you do this and your recipient will later find out that it's a bad joke, then they won't
take seriously your next notification when you will try to warn them about real virus and in the future they may not take seriously your advice regarding their business.

There is a very simple way for you to verify if virus is real and can cause actual damage.
Just go to http://www.symantec.com/, and in the search box enter the name of the possible
virus followed by the word "virus".

For example, in case of the hoax described above, you can enter "Olympic Torch virus" or
"invitation virus". In both cases you will see results that will help you clearly understand that this is a hoax.
