Alexa: trustworthy web traffic ranking indicator
What is www.alexa.com? It's an amazing tool that can help you find out approximately how much traffic is generated by any particular site on the internet. The lower the number, the more traffic you have.
Yahoo! (www.yahoo.com) is ranked number 1, www.msn.com - number 2, www.google.com - number 3. You get the idea. Those are the companies with billions of visitors.
Very large companies with monthly advertising budgets of many millions dollars get ranking somewhere between 1000 and 10,000.
Any company with a traffic ranking below 100,000 generates pretty good traffic. Sites with alexa ranking 100,000 - 250,000 get decent traffic. And higher the number, the less traffic for the web site.
Many people write about making money on the Net, but not many have the proof that they can actually do this.
That's funny to see "internet marketing" and "search engine optimization" consulting companies with alexa ranking above 500,000.
I wouldn't listen to anybody preaching about helping you get more traffic to your website if their alexa ranking is higher than 100,000. Why? Because this means that they can't get enough traffic to their own sites. So how can you expect them to help you get more traffic to your website, if they are struggling with traffic for their own sites? And no traffic means no sales, no revenue, no profits. Plain and simple.
I understand that Alexa is not an accurate traffic indicator for many industries, because it
depends on the cookies set by alexa on user machine. And if user never doesn't have alexa toolbar installed or never visited alexa in his life, then his visits may not be counted.
But as far as internet marketing and web design industry concerns, alexa ranking is pretty accurate.
Our main web site, http://www.1ezhost.biz currently has Alexa ranking 51, 421. You can check it out for yourself, just go to alexa traffic toolbar: http://www.alexa.com/data/details/?url=www.1ezhost.biz

Hello:
I read your article about Alexa ranking because you sent an e-mail to me asking me to check out your blog.
Your blog is cool, informative and ineteresting.
About Alexa ranking: No, you're mistaken. Google, Msn and Yahoo don't get billions of traffics!
There are may be about only 20,000,000 active users of internet in USA!
And that figure varies daily.
Yes, may be Google has indexed about a billion websites, but that doesn't mean they are getting a billion traffics or that a billion people are vsiting their site!
Also, if they claim they get about 2 million searches daily, that doesn't mean they are getting 2 million traffic.
One person alone can conduct hundreds of searches in a day.
I know that from my experience.
I make on the average 50 searches daily!
Also, Alexa doesn't count all traffics, so its traffic reading can be extremely misleading and inavlid.
Finally, just because a company has an Alexa rank of 50,000 or so doesn't mean that it can get all websites the same Alexa rank of traffic. That is faulty logic.
Warmly,
Ikey

Hi Ikey,
I just got back from Internet Marketing conference, that's why I didn't respond quicker to your comments.
First of all, thank you for the complement to my blog, I think it's cool too :)
You mentioned that "there are may be about only 20,000,000 active users of internet in USA".
May be so, but internet is not limited to the USA users, is it?
Even without mentioning English speaking countries, such as UK, Australia, and Canada (except Quebec), you need to consider internet users from other countries, who visits English websites, though their primary language is not English.
Think about Asia, Europe, and others. I don't know the exact statistics, but those numbers are huge. China alone has over 2 billion population, and if at least 10% uses internet, here are extra 200,000,000 internet users for you.
Let's suppose that only 10% from this group browse English-speaking sites, and you got another 20,000,000 internet visitors in addition to USA visitors.
Add visitors from other countries, and you'll get the picture.
Having said this, when I mentioned "billions of visitors", I didn't specifically indicated, that those are "visitors per day", did I?
If we'll take the traffic per year, instead of traffic per day, then the numbers could be close to the ones I mentioned...
And finally, though I mentioned that we had alexa ranking close to 50,000 (actually, it's a little higher at the moment, about 79K), I didn't claim that we can get the same ranking for our clients. You won't find such a claim on my post.
All I said that if company claims to specialize on internet marketing and search engine optimization, it should have alexa ranking below 100 K for it's own site.
And yes, alexa doesn't count all the traffic - if you read my post again, you'll notice that I said that alexa is not accurate traffic indicator for many industries, but it is pretty accurate for internet marketing industry.
Hope this answer your questions.
Best regards,
Oleg Ilin
